FlashAir™ - Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between FlashAir™ and a Standard SD Card?
The FlashAir™ SD Card incorporates flash memory which can be used as a standard SD Memory Card for storing any kind of digital data, in addition to that it includes a Wireless LAN chip set plus antenna for wireless communications.
  • What are the main benefits of using FlashAir™?
FlashAir™ allows sharing (upload/download) of images, videos and other data formats freely with Wireless LAN.  With FlashAir™ you can add wireless communications features to any non-wireless device if it has an SDHC Slot available.  Pictures and other data can be transferred to PCs, smart phones and tablet PCs without a cable connection.

Pictures can be uploaded to and downloaded from online storage services and social networks with a camera directly.
NOTE Server upload function requires a compatible device.

Peer to Peer (P2P) communication: Pictures and other data can be exchanged and shared with other devices.
NOTE  Data transfer between the FlashAir™ cards requires compatible devices.
  • Are special camera types required?
In general, any kind of camera with an SDHC Card Slot should be able to work with FlashAir™ Access Point (AP: Wireless LAN Server/Hot Spot) feature and pictures in the camera can be transferred to PCs and smart phones.

In future there will more and more cameras supporting FlashAir™ advanced features in the camera menu system, like P2P communication and download/upload from/to online storage services and social networks.
  • How is the connection between FlashAir and the receiving host established?
As soon as the FlashAir™ SD Card is powered up, it starts offering the Access Point function.  This can be easily identified by the receiving host by searching for new wireless networks.  The SSID named  "FlashAir" will appear as a connectable network and the receiving host can establish a direct connection to the FlashAir™ SD Card.
